Associated Press, NPR Music, Uncut Magazine, PopMatters and No Depression have all chimed in with praise.Įxpect to hear a lot of the new songs when Whitehorse performs in Hamilton on Saturday, May 27, at Bridgeworks as part of the “Smokestack Festival & Concert Series.” The two-day festival celebrating Canadian roots and blues music kicks off Friday, May 26 with performances by Juno-winning Hamilton blues artist Steve Strongman, Monkey Junk and the Hogtown All-Stars. That classic country sound took hold and had an indelible imprint on the couple’s own song writing, resulting in the new Whitehorse album of 12 McClelland-Doucet originals called “I’m Not Crying, You’re Crying.” The album has received rave reviews across North America and in the United Kingdom since its release on the Six Shooter Records label in January. They binged not only on Prine, but also Kris Kristofferson, Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris, George Jones and Tammy Wynette, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. Prine’s 2020 death, at the age of 73 due to complications from COVID, caused them to take a dive deep into their record collection.

McClelland and Doucet were big fans of Prine, and the rootsy story-telling form of country music his songs represented. The husband-and-wife musical duo known as Whitehorse were isolated in their house, home-schooling their eight-year-old son Jimi and trying not to go stir crazy. The pandemic didn’t really hit home for Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet until John Prine died.
